BROOKLYN, N.Y, September 27, 2022—On Monday, September 19th, Morris Heights Health Center(MHHC) hosted a celebration for the grand
opening of their new Brooklyn health facility located at 1095 Flatbush
Avenue. The public event drew in community partners, legislators, key
stakeholders, and supporters. In addition to the ceremony, the health
center welcomed community members to their first of many health resource
fairs in collaboration with local community-based organizations.
MHHC Brooklyn, a new state-of-the-art facility, anticipated opening its
doors in early 2022, however unforeseen circumstances delayed the initial
opening date. Conveniently located in the diverse and vibrant Flatbush
community, the new health center provides culturally sensitive care to
thousands of residents in Central Brooklyn. Brooklyn is home to the largest
Caribbean diaspora in New York City, and MHHC understands the importance
of having a team of health care professionals that representative the
communities they serve. The health center consists of a multilingual and
multicultural team of health experts that are responsive to the needs
of patients from all backgrounds, ethnicities, identities, and health
situations. The health facility will serve as a one stop medical provider,
offering access to a full range of quality, comprehensive health care
services that includes family medicine, pediatrics, women’s health,
behavioral health, and nutrition counseling. The 15,000 square foot health
facility was strategically situated in the Flatbush community to help
improve access to quality primary and preventative care services. Central
Brooklyn has some of the most vulnerable communities in New York City;
where residents are experiencing significant levels of health disparities,
with higher rates of obesity, diabetes, hypertension, and maternal and
infant mortality compared to other communities in King’s County.
MHHC, a Federally Qualified Health Center (FQHC), prides itself on building
strong relationships with community-based organizations to address the
social determinants of health that have plagued high-risk populations.
The opening of MHHC Brooklyn and it’s Maternal Health Center of Excellence
which includes a doula program comes at a crucial time as New York City
Mayor Eric Adams recently signed into law seven legislative bills that
will expand access to maternal health care, promote education and transparency,
and broaden the citywide doula programming. In New York City alone, black
women are eight times more likely to die of pregnancy-related complications
than their white counterparts. The historic signing of bills like intros
409-A, which aims to improve access to data on maternal mortality and
morbidity; intros 472-A, which provides training for doulas and improves
access to doula services for residents across the five boroughs; intros
482-A, which provides public data on polycystic ovary syndrome and endometriosis;
and intros 509-A, which creates a public education program on maternal
mortality and morbidity, and requires DOHMH to report on the incidence
of cesarean sections, will help support the health center’s efforts
to address the needs of communities where women of color have historically
experienced negative maternal health outcomes.
MHHC Brooklyn is looking to transform the way community health care is
delivered in the borough. The facility is outfitted with a modern design
that offers a warm and patient-centered environment. The new health center
plans to provide roughly 15,000 visits in the first year. It’s complete
with over 27 patient exam rooms, 2 waiting rooms, and 2 reception check-in
stations. MHHC Brooklyn is now accepting new patients. To schedule an
