| 20 years ago, with Infant Mortality rates hovering around 26
to 28/1000, teenage pregnancy at epidemic proportion and late or
no entry into prenatal care being the norm, Morris Heights Health
Center was the first in the nation in a low- income urban
neighborhood to provide out of hospital births. To date, the
center has advanced from a birthing center into a full-spectrum
women’s health and education services program that
addresses the ever-evolving health and social needs of the women
in the community. The scope of services includes prenatal care,
labor and delivery, preconception and child birth education
classes as well as postpartum care, family planning,
gynecological and mature women’s health services, HIV
counseling, testing and treatment and ultrasounds. 1500 –
2000 prenatals are served annually yielding 600 – 800
births yearly. With the aid of the Prenatal Care Assistance
Program, our community perinatal profile has improved with infant
mortality rate less than 5.1/1000 and 90% entering into prenatal
care within the first and early part of second trimester. |
| The MHHC Women’s Health Program is committed to
continue providing the best quality services to women of all
ages. |
